Uber Canada released an updated set of guidelines for riders and drivers, along with tips on how to improve your star rating as a customer.
“Most riders show drivers the respect they deserve. But some don’t. Some people leave trash in the car, throw up in the back seat after too much to drink, or ask drivers to break the speed limit so they can get to work on time,” stated the company in a press statement.
The updated set of community guidelines urges riders and drivers to respect each other, stating: “Remember that when you use Uber you will meet people who may look different or think differently from you. Please respect those differences.”
It also advises giving each other personal space, stating that it’s okay to chat, but to refrain from commenting on someone’s appearance or asking if they are single. It also advises: “Don’t touch or flirt with other people in the car. As a reminder, Uber has a no-sex rule. That’s no sexual conduct between drivers and riders, no matter what.”
Both drivers and riders have safety obligations, the guidelines note, and children must be accompanied on Uber rides.
For those who want that coveted five star rating as an Uber passenger, Uber suggests pinning your location accurately (or preferably adding a pick-up address) and refraining from asking Uber drivers to over-stuff their cars. Additionally, the app recommends being ready to jump into the Uber immediately as it rolls up, confirming the ride before getting in and treating the driver with respect.
On the flip side, there are several ways that riders can lose access to Uber: damaging drivers’ or other passengers’ property, physical contact with the driver or fellow riders, unwanted contact with the driver or fellow passenger after the trip is over, breaking the local law while using Uber or use of inappropriate and abusive language or gestures — which, somewhat ironically, Uber CEO Trevor Kalanick recently apologized for after a heated conversation with a driver.
