Samsung Galaxy S8 to feature facial recognition feature, according to new report

leak of Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone

When Samsung unveiled the ill-fated Note 7, the company spent a good portion of its presentation playing up the smartphone’s iris-scanning functionality. Moving into the launch the Galaxy S8, it seemed Samsung was guaranteed to bring that feature, even if it wasn’t as groundbreaking as promised. However, it now appears Samsung will instead try to one-up Apple, which is reportedly considering whether to add facial recognition technology to the next iPhone.

The Investor, citing the Korean Economic Daily, reports Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S8 phone will feature a hardware facial recognition biometric authentication feature.

“Due to some limits of iris scanning such as speed and accuracy, we have decided to add facial recognition to the Galaxy S8,” said one of the unnamed Samsung executives quoted in the original Korean Economic Daily piece. “With a face scanner, it will take less than 0.01 seconds to unlock the phone.”

Samsung is scheduled to officially unveil the Galaxy S8 on March 29th at an event in New York City. Samsung’s next flagship is rumoured to feature Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 835 chipset, a bezel-less ‘Infinity Display‘ and a Samsung-made personal assistant called Bixby.
