OnePlus said on Friday it would be making an announcement today where “anything could happen.” Today, that announcement is the removal of its invitation system to purchase the OnePlus One, its current flagship.
On the company blog OnePlus noted, “Our invite system has been a fascinating, evolving experiment. Within the community, feelings towards our invite system vary, and we understand that. The reality is that we wouldn’t be where we are today without it.” The OnePlus One came to market on April 23rd 2014, and a year later, the company has sold over a million Ones worldwide.
Effective today, anyone who has ever wanted a OnePlus One can now order without an invite. The company has likely overcome any manufacturing issues, and can now keep up with demand. OnePlus is also offering a 24-hour anniversary sale that discounts Flip Covers and Screen Protectors by 75%, and has also opened up the Bamboo StyleSwap covers to all without an invite.
Finally, OnePlus hasn’t completely removed the invite system. The company announced the OnePlus 2, its next flagship smartphone, will follow the same history and “initially launch with invites,” in Q3 this year. OnePlus said, “The OnePlus 2 will bring the challenges that come along with a brand new product, and initially, our invite system will help us to manage that risk. It also helps us to be sure that every OnePlus 2 user gets the amazing experience that they deserve.”
