Mobile World Congress kicked off in Barcelona last week and we finally got an official look at the HTC One M9. Many of the leaks and rumours turned out to be true, but one thing we didn’t see last Sunday was a larger version of the device.
Prior to the event, there was speculation that we’d see a HTC One M9 but also a One M9 Plus. Now that the dust from Barcelona has settled, the rumour mill is powering back up after its short break, and people are talking about the One M9 Plus again. The photo below was posted by @Upleaks and show a phone that looks a lot like the One M9 with a few key differences, most notably the large, round camera module.
It’s possible that this photo is a decoy or an early prototype from before the phone was official, but it’s fuelled talk that HTC has another variant of the One M9 that it has yet to unveil. Additional photos posted to Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo show a device with the same camera module, as well as a physical home button.
Just to shake things up a bit (because why have one theory when you can have two?), it’s also possible HTC has a third One M9 device. Another tweet from @upleaks references a ‘Hima mini,’ which didn’t make an appearance last Sunday either. HTC launched the original One mini and HTC One Mini 2 not long after the One M7 and One M8 became available, so precedent for a HTC One mini 3 based on the One M9 already exists. However, given how large phones have become, the One M9 is already considered “small” for a flagship. It’s equally possible that HTC planned for another mini but then decided to follow Apple’s lead with a larger, phablet-style phone.
