Late last year, the Société de transport de Montreal (STM), along with Bell, Rogers, TELUS and Videotron, announced that they would be collaborating to bring cell service to the subway system. The initiative, priced at around $50 million, was “divided into five phases that should be completed within a period of five to seven years.”
A few weeks ago we informed you that five stations went live with 3G and LTE connectivity: Saint-Laurent, Place-des-Arts, McGill, Peel and Guy-Concordia. Today, the STM confirmed these stations to be live and stated that the first phase rollout of underground cell service is completed. Next next phase is underway and over the next two years will see cell service reach the green and orange lines “between Beaudry and Guy-Concordia on the green line and between Mont-Royal and Namur on the orange line.”
The STM also noted that Berri-UQAM, which services over 125,000 commuters per day, will be live by the end of 2014.
