Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport, stated last week that Canadian airlines will soon allow passengers to use portable electronic devices (PED) during taxi, takeoff and landings. A quick week later, two major airlines have flipped the proverbial switch.
WestJet announced that “we have been hard at work to meet all necessary conditions required for the safe operation of PEDs on board our Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft. Beginning today, all WestJet guests will have access to their favourite device for the duration of their flight, as long as it remains in airplane mode.” Testing on WestJet’s Bombardier Q400s planes are also now in testing for PED use. In addition, Air Canada has also given the green light for passengers to use their devices from “gate-to-gate.”
Transport Canada previously noted that passengers who use plan on using their smartphone, tablet, camera, portable games and laptops will need to ensure they put the device airplane mode before using them on a flight.
