The April Android distribution numbers are out, and it’s looking good for KitKat. The time between March 3rd and April 1st saw Android 4.4 KitKat rise to 5.3% of devices checking into the Google Play Store (which means downloading, not just visiting) from 2.5% the month before.
This was in large part to the worldwide release of Android 4.4 to the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Note 3 during the month, and will spike even higher when the company does the same for the S3 and Note 2 in the coming months. The HTC One and LG G2 also received Android 4.4 during the month, with newer devices coming with the version pre-installed.
Jelly Bean, Android 4.1 to 4.3, is down slightly from last month to 61.4% of all products, with 4.2 receiving a slight bump while both 4.1 and 4.3 declined marginally. Android 4.1 still comprises the higher number with 34.4%, but that number is slowly going down as older devices are being upgraded. Ice Cream Sandwich, Android 4.0.x, is down to 14.3% from 15.2% a month ago, and Gingerbread dropped 1.2% to 17.8%. Froyo is still holding on, unfortunately, with 1.1% of devices.
In all, a relatively unremarkable month punctuated by a decent increase in KitKat numbers.
