Huawei’s Canadian Research Centre in Kanata is the ‘global hub’ for 5G technology

While other non-Canadian are struggling to find ways and reasons to invest here, Huawei is moving along swimmingly with its Canadian Research Centre in Kanata.

Back in 2010 the China-based company signed a five-year deal with Ottawa that would see them invest a total of $80 million and employ over 150 new jobs into a new R&D centre. A press release today noted that the obligations have already been met and Huawei plans to keep the money flowing. Huawei Canada President Sean Yang stated, “this continued investment in the Canada Research Centre reinforces our belief that Canada and the Ottawa Region remain one of the strongest markets in the world for innovative technology development.”

Apparently the work being completed in the R&D centre has made it become “the global hub for Huawei’s research efforts in advanced 5G technology.” This fifth-generation tech is expected to be available in by 2020 offering wireless speeds north of 10 Gbps.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson said, “We are very pleased that Huawei continues to invest and expand their research operations in Ottawa. As we complete our trade mission, Huawei stands as a shining example for other Chinese companies as to the skilled technology workforce that exists in our region, and the benefits that can come by investing in Ottawa.”
