Samsung to release a phone with a curved display

Samsung has been working on a flexible display for years. We first saw a prototype back at CES 2011 and the rumours were that it would make its official appearance on one their flagship devices in 2012, but reportedly met with manufacturing challenges. Samsung also branded its flexible display lineup with the name of ‘YOUM’ – which Samsung claims are “thinner, lighter and “unbreakable” than current smartphone displays.

According to a report in Reuters, Samsung will be launching a smartphone with a curved display sometime next month. Samsung’s marketing lead D.J. Lee stated “We plan to introduce a smartphone with a curved display in South Korea in October…. As plastic liquid crystal displays are strong enough to neither shatter even when dropped on the ground nor need frames, it is possible to produce devices with unique designs. The curved panels are not flexible.”

The rumoured device to be graced with the curves is apparently a ‘limited edition’ Galaxy Note 3. No word on a Canadian release, but the curved display is progress and one step closer to a flexible and bendable smartphone.
