BlackBerry released BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) 7 last December and with it included BBM Voice. This feature gave BlackBerry users the ability to make free calls to other BBM users over a WiFi connection. At the time of release BBM Voice was only available to those with a BlackBerry smartphone running BlackBerry 6 OS or higher, with the promise that it might arrive for those with OS 5. Today, BlackBerry announced that BBM version 7.0.1 with BBM Voice is now available for BlackBerry smartphones running the BlackBerry 5 OS.
In addition, BlackBerry declared in an email to us that over 50 million BBM Voice calls have been made over the 3-month period. No other details on what countries are using BBM Voice, nor how long the calls are. Those would be interesting stats to see. BlackBerry has over 79 million subscribers and over 60 million BBM users worldwide.
