May Payne for iOS was released earlier this month to great acclaim, both for its touchscreen controls and its faithful adherence to the original game mechanics. The Android version was supposed to be released yesterday, but Rockstar Games have decided to delay it until “the next week or so,” according to a tweet from the official account.
“Some last testing required to make sure we can get Max Payne Mobile on as many Android devices as possible – thx for your patience!” says a follow-up tweet. Rockstar is likely trying to avoid the same travails as Imangi Studios, who had to update its smash hit Temple Run multiple times in the first few days due to incompatibility on multiple devices.
Android developers often cite testing as their most laborious and expensive aspect of app creation. Because there are thousands of different hardware, screen size and software combinations on the market, it’s often impossible to cater to every model. Rockstar is likely trying to prevent that initial outcry of “This game doesn’t work on my device!”
So, Android gamers, hold tight: Max Payne is coming soon, and it will likely be awesome. In the meantime, download GTA 3 if you need your Rockstar Games fix.
