Jelly Bean is the rumoured name of Google’s next big Android OS. This tasty name hasn’t been confirmed, but has been hinted at various times and will follow other names such as Gingerbread, Eclair, Donut. While many users are still pining for the 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade, Google and manufacturers seem to be already working on 5.0. There’s still no timing, possibly in the fall, but last week Hiroshi Lockheimer, Google VP of engineering for mobile, said “After Android 4 comes 5, and we haven’t announced the timing yet, which we’re still sorting out. There’s a lot of engineering work behind it still, and there’s also just the question of how to time it”.
If ASUS has anything to do with it they’ll be one of the first to push out 5.0. In an interview with TechRadar, Benson Lin, Asus’ Corporate VP, might have just unofficially confirmed the OS name.“Asus is very close to Google, so once they have Android 5.0 I think there will be a high possibility that we will be the first wave to offer the Jelly Bean update.”
There’s still a great deal of unknowns here – timing, devices, features. However, Asus has done a good job of providing updates on a timely manner and also communicating when users can expect future OS updates. So for them to be included in “the first wave to offer the Jelly Bean update” will bring much joy to ASUS Android fans.
