Earlier today Nadir Mohamed, President and CEO of Rogers, spoke at the Economic Club of Canada. His presentation was about “Driving Canada’s Digital Future” and he gave some insights into what Rogers is planning. We’ve got some prime quotes but the past of basic talk, text and data services are history and the future is all about “machine-to-machine” (M2M) – basically connecting all your devices together, not just your phone and computer – everything (Rogers is currently working with Toronto Hydro for track electricity usage and also with the City of Ottawa to remotely monitor traffic lights in the city). Rogers wants to be at the core of this evolving connected life.
In addition, Rogers will be introducing “Rogers Smart Home Monitoring”. This is a home management system that takes home security further where you’ll be able to manage your home wherever you are. This will start rolling out in phases over the next few months.
Here’s a few quotes from the presentation:
“We’re driven to enhance the lives of Canadians. And, we’re driven to deliver the next wave of growth. So what do we need to drive this growth? We need to work together. Canadians don’t want industry competitors engaging in a war of words. They want us to focus on them. They want us to deliver more innovation, more quickly and more cost effectively.”
“Voice. Data. Video. That’s our world looking backwards. Connected experiences. That’s the future. And while the rest of the industry competes for a slice of a shrinking pie, we’re also focused on growing a new one. Take the new players. They are focused on introducing basic services like voice and text that have been around for some time. Or take the established competitors. They’re focused on replicating our assets and trying to catch up in areas like data where we’ve been focused for years.”
“The next platform to drive this transformation is mobile broadband in an all-IP world. It’s creating incredible opportunities for growth and I’d like to highlight a few initiatives that we’re investing in. The first is machine-to-machine… and it’s a world that’s already taking shape… M2M connects devices to back-end IT systems to enable the collection and exchange of data. It’s a world where machines talk to each other and they talk to you. It’s a world that leverages our networks to deliver real-time connectivity… Today Canadians have an estimated 360 million machines or devices that need to be connected. And, the M2M space is estimated to grow by 500 percent in the next 5 years.”
“The second growth initiative I’d like to touch on is a next-generation home monitoring system… in the coming months we’ll introduce the first step in this journey; the phased roll out of Rogers Smart Home Monitoring… Rogers is re-defining the notion of home security and taking it several steps further. Levering our strength of our networks in an all-IP-based environment; this new service will start as a real-time home monitoring system with energy management and home automation tools. It will allow you to access the news, sports, or local traffic via your home security panel as you walk out the door… It will allow you to use your mobile device to turn your lights on and off, to adjust your thermostat, and to receive alerts telling you when your kids arrive home safely.”
