Perplexity AI is reportedly striking a deal with Motorola and Samsung to have its AI assistant built into the upcoming Razr flip phone as an alternative to Google’s Gemini.
Conflicting reports about how far along the two companies’ negotiation process are circulating. According to Bloomberg, the deal is still being hashed out, but the terms could include offering Perplexity as the default AI assistant or simply preloading the app on phones.
However, one small problem that could hold up the deal is Samsung’s close relationship with Google. The two companies have worked together to co-develop Wear OS and Android XR, and Google has even added its messaging service to Samsung devices. On the contrary, the investment portion of Samsung (named NEXT) invested in the tech company last year, citing “its focus on AI-powered information interpretation that sources from fresh and up-to-date material.”
If they add Perplexity, the chatbot will join Motorola’s AI assistant and Google Gemini as the available AI chatbots on Razr devices.
Shifting directions, the new Razr flip phones will have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite powering the device. The new devices will feature 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512 GB of storage. The new RAZR will also sport a 4700 mAh battery that supports 66w TurboPower charging and 30W wireless charging.
The new Razrs will support Android 15 out of the box, alongside Bluetooth 5.4 and two SIM card slots. The primary camera will be 50 megapixels, and a 50 megapixel ultrawide unit will be available.
From photos shown on Android Headlines, the phone will come in black, pink, red, and wood.
