Intellivision Entertainment has announced that it will be unveiling a new console on October 1st.
The Intellivision system, originally released by Mattel in 1979, went on to become a major rival to Atari’s VCS system.
The new Intellivision is being spearhead by Tommy Tallarico, game developer and co-founder of the popular Video Games Live concert tour, as well as the former co-host of Electric Playground. While the system doesn’t yet have a name, Tallarico told VentureBeat it will feature a “new concept, design and approach to gaming.”
In the interview, Tallarico also confirmed that the system will use an emulator and have 10 games ready at launch.
Games will need to be downloaded onto an SD card from a digital store using the system’s built-in Wi-Fi connectivity.
Overall, though, Tallarico said the system is intended to be simple and appeal to the “non-gamer” family demographic.
“I see a huge gaping hole in the market now with families in the home,” Tallarico told VentureBeat. “We will be focused. We will not try to compete with Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. That would be insane, and we would need $1 billion.”
Tallarico confirmed that he will be holding a Facebook Live on May 31st for a Q&A session to speak more about the new Intellivision ahead of the full reveal in October.
Intellivision is the latest company to look towards cashing in on nostalgia by bringing back retro consoles.
Nintendo found great success with its NES Classic in 2016 and SNES Classic in 2017, while Sega’s miniature Genesis replica and Atari’s retro VCS console are set to launch later this year.
