Samsung ordered to pay Apple total of $539 million for infringing on iPhone patents

In an ongoing patent case that dates back nearly seven years ago in 2011, a jury has found Samsung guilty of patent infringement and ruled that the South Korean tech giant must pay Apple a total of $539 million USD.

The main portion of the damages, amounting to $533,316,606, related to Samsung infringing on three specific design patents, while the remaining $5,325,050, pertains to two utility patents. The unanimous decision was handed down in the U.S. District Court in San Jose.

While Samsung was already found guilty of infringing on these patents, this trial determined how much the company would actually have to pay out to Apple.

Today’s ruling is a win for Apple and a significant loss for Samsung, as the amount the South Korean company must now pay exceeds the $339 million it was previously ruled to shell out. Apple, however, aimed for $1 billion in damages, with Samsung claiming the company should only pay $28 million to its rival.

The case’s original verdict from back in 2012 found Samsung guilty of infringement, with a jury ruling that the company must pay Apple just over $1 billion. Samsung, as expected, appealed the damages, with the number being reduced to $339 million.

Apple’s statement regarding the trial reads as follows:

“It is a fact that Samsung blatantly copied our design. We’re grateful to the jury for their service and are pleased they agree Samsung should pay for copying our products.”

Apple believes that Samsung should pay out all of its profits earned from devices that feature patent infringing components, with Samsung stating that it should only have to pay damages related to the cost of specific infringing components.
