If you’re bored of always hearing the same Alexa voice regardless of what skill you’re using, this is likely the update you’ve been waiting for.
The latest Alexa developer preview allows Skill creators to choose from a selection of voices, including Polly — which features 24 languages — Amazon’s text-to-speed service. This means Skill creators can give various characters in a given Skill different voices, according to Amazon.
It was already possible to add additional voices to Alexa through MP3 recordings, but this solution is definitely more seamless for developers.
The feature currently only allows developers to select from eight U.S. English voices, which means it could be some time before multi-voice Alexa Skills make their way to Canada.
Google recently announced it’s bringing six voices to Assistant, so this is likely a move on Amazon’s part to keep up with its main competitor in the smart home space.
