Facebook currently testing downvote feature in New Zealand and Australia

Facebook is testing the long awaited downvote feature.

According to a Facebook spokesperson who sent a release to MobileSyrup, via email, the company is only testing this feature in New Zealand and Australia.

“…we’re running a test that introduces an upvote and downvote action for comments on large public Page posts. This feature allows people to push those thoughtful and engaging comments to the top of the discussion thread, and to move down the ones that are simply attacks or filled with profanity. This does not affect your personal News Feed or interactions with friends,” said the Facebook spokesperson.

Facebook says that it’s still in early testing for this feature and it may not roll out broadly. First the social media service would like to see if users find it useful.

The company also doesn’t want people to think of it as a dislike button, but want its users to provide feedback on how constructive a comment is. Users already can engage with comments with a variety of emojis. These emojis come in the form of a heart emoji, sad face emoji, angry face emoji and so on.

This feature is similar to the social news aggregation platform Reddit. In fact, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian Sr. tweeted “flattered” regarding the new feature.

Facebook reportedly tested this feature back in February with a small group in the U.S.
