Huawei passed on opportunity to manufacture Google’s Pixel smartphones, company executive confirms

It turns out rumours were true.

Speaking with German publication WinFuture, Colin Giles, vice president of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, said on record that the company passed on the chance to manufacture the Pixel and Pixel XL for Google.

He went on to state that Huawei reason for doing so came down to branding. Google wanted its brand to dominate Pixel devices. Huawei, on the other hand, understandably so, had no desire to go back to making devices for someone else. Despite setbacks in the North American market, the company still has aspirations to surpass Apple as the second biggest smartphone maker.

While a decision like that likely had a negative effect on Huawei’s relationship with Google, the two companies are expected to collaborate on future devices, including a long rumoured 7-inch tablet that runs Google next generation Andromeda operating system.’
