The Wireless Power Consortium, an organization that counts companies like Huawei, Nokia and Logitech among its members, today announced the latest revision of its Qi Wireless charging standard.
Starting today, future Qi-enabled devices will be able to support a charging rate of 15 watts, bringing it up to the same potential charging speed as Quick Charge 2.0-compatible devices.
15 watts, it turns out, is the most common limit at which the majority of quick charge implementations function, which means that some future devices will support both wireless charging and quick charging, and they’ll be able to do them at the same time.
It’s a cool idea, to be sure, but as Android Police notes, whether it’s a good is another question. The drawback of both charging methods is that they cause the device in question to generate additional heat. Anyone that has had one of their device’s batteries warped by heat knows how much even a couple of extra degrees sustained over an extended period of time can damage a device.
Wireless charging has been gaining traction in recent years, with devices like the Nexus 6 and Galaxy S6 supporting Qi natively. Ikea recently introduced a line of bedroom furniture with integrated Qi wireless charging as well.
