With several upgrades planned for its Data API, YouTube has decided to stop supporting a significant number of devices that depend on an older version of the API to access the popular video streaming site.
In a post on its official blog, YouTube outlined the devices that will be affected by the decision to deprecate its Data API. Included in the list are older smart TVs and blu-ray players built by Sony and Panasonic, as well as Google TV devices running version 3 and 4, game consoles that don’t have access to Flash or HTML 5 and Apple mobile devices running versions of iOS lower than iOS 7.
The second generation Apple TV is also affected by YouTube’s decision to deprecate its Data API. That is, any Apple TV bought before the latest one was released in 2012 will not be able to play YouTube videos. Technically, those with older Apple TVs can still play YouTube videos by using AirPlay to streaming a video from their iPod, iPhone or iPad, a not ideal but still serviceable solution.
