Samsung is poised to begin selling the Galaxy K Zoom at its corporate stores and through carrier partner Rogers.
We received a tip that the company has set up in-store displays for the camera-centric Android device this week, and as with the Galaxy Camera it will be sold unlocked for compatibility with any carrier. The 4.8-inch Android device sports a 720p display, a hexa-core Exynos processor, 2GB of RAM, 8GB internal storage and a whopping 20.7MP rear camera with a 10x optical zoom, equivalent to 24-240mm focal length. It also runs Android 4.4.2
The main attraction is the 20.7MP 1/2.3″ CMOS BSI sensor, likely the same one as found inside the Sony Xperia Z2 and Z3. Unlike those devices, though, Samsung has paired it with optical image stabilization and a 24-240mm (10x) F3.1-6.3 zoom lens and autofocus assist LED. While not quite in the same league as Sony’s range of 1″ point-and-shoot cameras, the K Zoom holds its own against every other Android device, offering great low-light photos and superlative zoom shots.
It’s unclear for what price the Galaxy K Zoom will be sold, but the SM-C115 model should theoretically work over LTE with Rogers and Bell, as it supports Band 7 (2600Mhz) but the SM-C115W model listed on Samsung Canada’s support page lists Band 4 (AWS), Band 7 (2600Mhz) and Band 17 (700Mhz) as supported.
The device was announced in April, but has yet to receive a North American release.
Update: Rogers has let us know that despite what appears in the photos, the carrier has no plans to release the Galaxy K Zoom in its own stores. We’re not entirely sure why there are Rogers apps preloaded on the Galaxy K Zoom demo devices, but we’re awaiting on a response from Samsung on the matter.
(Thanks Sean and Howard!)
