Google launched Play Newsstand, the replacement for its Magazine hub, in November, bringing news, journals, magazines and RSS feeds to a single app. We enjoyed it when it launched, and have used it extensively since.
But the question of whether Currents, the company’s other news portal, remained. Now, we have an answer: Currents is no more, and Google is encouraging users to transition to Play Newsstand, the obvious better choice.
Google Currents debuted on Android in late 2011, followed by an iOS release that worked across iPhone and iPad. Currents was one of the first Android newsreaders to support the larger tablet interface, and was, for a time, a very functional and attractive app. But Google let Current languish without updates for months, eventually choosing to overshadow it with Newsstand.
If you haven’t tried Play Newsstand, give it a go.
