Instagram used to be ugly on both iOS and Android. Now, it’s just ugly on Android. The Facebook-owned startup revamped the app’s UI when iOS 7 was released last September, but the Android version, despite innovations to the platform as a whole, has remained static.
Holofication Nation, a two-man team of Android modders, is looking to change that perception. So far, they’ve revamped Instagram, Grooveshark, Steam and Snapchat, but the list will continue to grow.
While the Instagram redo is little more than a glorified paint job, it’s a lovely one, bringing the design more in line with what users expect from a modern Android app. Users have to uninstall the current Instagram app and manually load the modified one, but once completed the app works exactly the same as the Google Play version. There are a few bugs in the app right now, such as loading a video from the Gallery, but these should be squashed in due time.
The team will continue to add new apps, and are taking requests at the moment. Some, like Facebook, are controlled server-side, and will not be modified.
