It’s been a long road for those who took part in the Canadian Mint’s “MintChip Challenge.” Officially kicked off last April, 500 developers challenged themselves to create a digital payment app on various platforms (iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, desktop and mobile browsers) with the goal to one day help the Mint bridge into the “virtual currency” era. The MintChip can be embedded into smartphones, USB device, in the cloud, or on a microSD card and allows users to securely pay “microtransactions” via a desired device. The winner, who’ll be announced today at 12 noon EST, will walk away with 10 oz of GOLD (1 Gold Wafer, .9999 purity), equals approximately $17,000.
Update: The winners have been announced. The “Best Overall Application” goes to MintWallet by “coronox” who surprisingly created it on a Nokia Windows Phone device. The full video of the demo is below, but other winners include Pennies a Day, Flash Cash, and Mini Checkout.
