New Canadian wireless entrant Public Mobile launched their service last Thursday and without a heartbeat got trampled on by other new entrant WIND Mobile. Public states they offer true unlimited plans and give a flat rate $40/month “unlimited talk and text” with no contacts or credit checks. Sounds like a good deal if you’re located in the Toronto and Montreal regions.
In addition they currently offer 4 low end phones and can buy them outright:
ZTE C78 – $70
Kyocera Tomo – $110
Samsung R312 – $130
Kyocera G2G0 – $180
You have to remember that Public Mobile is not going after people who want a smartphone or for that matter anything more than an entry level phone. They have said in the past that they will expand their offering as their customers needs grow, but currently they are going after the “value conscious segment” who feel like there is currently no choice in wireless for them. They are also banking on those potential customers who basically stay in the Public Mobile calling area and do not leave. Public Mobile does state on their site that “your phone will be out of service when you leave the Public Mobile coverage area. You will not be able to make or receive calls.” That just might be a problem in the future for them.
Even though I’m not in their target market, I actually like the Public Mobile brand. It’s clean, speaks about their values and will connect with new Canadians looking to get their first cellphone. Also, they only invested $53 million to get into the wireless game and where some people thought their unwanted G-block spectrum would not work… it’s actually sort of working out. Now it’s about being reliable to their customers.
Here are a few commercials that Public has on television… what do you think about Public Mobile?
