A recent report showed that over 6.6 million Canadians now own a smartphone, this represents just over 30% of the market. Carriers are recognizing that Canadians are transitioning from regular handsets to Smartphones and have started to market accordingly. Smartphones have many capabilities, but some of the more popular features have users surfing the web and getting their email. Over the past year smartphones specs have seen a significant boost, most are now launching with a dual-core processor and a average screen size of about 4-inches.
Last week Bell created a new “Superphone” category which only houses devices that fit these 3 characteristics: is capable of speeds of up to at least 14.4 Mbps, has a dual-core processor and a large, high-quality screen. Rogers might seem to be making a similar move as they are on the verge of introducing a new “Smartphone Lite” category. Straight from the Nokia X7 internal doc it reads that “Smartphone Lite devices are available at affordable prices with new low cost data plan options… The Smartphone Lite category will officially launch in Q3.”
We’ll have more info on this soon, especially on the new low cost data options, but you can expect this “Smartphone Lite” category for mid-range handsets such as the Curve 9300, LG Phoenix or possibly End of Life devices. We’ve curious what the upcoming LTE devices from Samsung and HTC will be called, “Beyond 4G Smartphones”?
