Music streamer Spotify launched a new feature that should make it a little easier to use when you don’t have an internet connection.
The platform’s new ‘Offline Backup’ feature is rolling out globally to Premium subscribers with the ability to automatically build a playlist of music users have recently listened to that can be accessed when offline.
According to Spotify, Offline Backup will take queued and recently streamed tracks to make the playlist. It’ll also pull tracks that are already stored on users’ devices, like the cache of music people frequently listen to. The Offline Backup playlist will evolve over time based on users’ listening habits.
Moreover, Spotify says users will be able to filter and sort songs in the playlists based on artist, mood and genre so they always get what they want to listen to.
Spotify says Offline Backup will automatically appear in the Home feed whenever users go offline. Additionally, users can add the playlist to their Library for easy access.
To get Offline Backup, Spotify users will need to have listened to more than five songs recently, have the most recent version of the app and have offline listening enabled (you can check this by heading to Settings > Data Saving and offline > Storage and toggle ‘Offline Listening’).
Offline Backup sounds like a pretty helpful feature overall, though it remains to be seen how well it works. I’ve definitely found myself scrambling to download songs for offline listening before boarding a plane, so having something that works in the background would be a nice bonus.
