The organization behind the Bluetooth standard has revealed Bluetooth 6.0, which has a new feature called ‘Channel Sounding’ that should allow for devices using Bluetooth 6 to determine the distance between each other. Since this spec has just been released, it’s unlikely we’ll see any devices with it this year, but 2025 could be a big year for tracking tags.
Channel Sounding should allow third-party device trackers from companies like Chipolo and Tile to offer more robust finding controls that align more with trackers that use Ultrawideband tech to offer more direct location tracking as well.
This basically means that if you have a tracker and a phone with Bluetooth 6, you should be able to see the precise distance of your tracker as long as you’re within Bluetooth range of it. This makes it a lot easier to find things if you have a house with multiple stories, for example.
In addition, the company says that this added feature should help with things like smart locks and other devices that could benefit from knowing if you’re near them. For example, it could unlock a feature where as you walk up to your smart doorlock, it senses your phone is near and unlocks the door before you even reach for the handle.
There are other minor changes to the standard as well, but they’re a bit more technical and don’t immediately apply themselves to real-world situations like Channel Sounding does. You can read the full list of updates here.
