With Android P Developer Preview 2, Google has killed the ‘battery saving’ option in favour of one on/off toggle for location settings.
This tweak is just one of the many changes included in the second Android P developer preview. Google released the preview and public beta at its I/O developer conference yesterday.
In Android Oreo and older versions of the operating system, location had three options: high accuracy, battery saving and device only. High accuracy used everything to determine location, but battery saving mode restricted location so it couldn’t use GPS.
GPS tends to be harder on the battery than mobile networks and Wi-Fi. Device only restricted it only to the GPS sensors on the device.
However, tapping advanced and then tapping Google Location Accuracy give users the option to turn off everything except GPS.
So the only real loss here is the battery saving mode. It’s not clear why exactly this change was implemented.
While those who enjoyed the battery saving mode may miss the feature, it will be simpler for users and developers. For the most part its a simple option: do you want location services, or not?
