Google starts rolling out Assistant to Marshmallow and Nougat devices

Google Assistant

Google has started rolling out Assistant, its artificial intelligence-powered personal helper, to non-Pixel Android devices. For the time being, the Google Play Services update that enables the AI on Marshmallow and Nougat smartphones is only rolling out in the U.S.

However, according to Google, English-speaking Android users in Canada will see the update arrive on their smartphones in the near future. Google says it will also push the update to English-speaking users in the U.K. and Australia, as well German speaking users in Germany, at approximately the same time. The company plans to add support for additional languages at a later date.

We’ve contacted Google to try and find out a more specific launch than “soon.” We’ll update this article if we hear back from the company.

When Assistant does arrive here, it will replace Android’s Google Search functionality. Canadian Android users will be able to launch the personal helper by long pressing their smartphone’s home button or by saying “Ok Google” to their device.
