Red Dead Redemption coming to iPhone and Android

The game will be free to play with a Netflix subscription

While the world waits for GTA VI a little longer, Rockstar Games is about to release its hit 2010 western Red Dead Redemption on compatible phones.

The game is set to launch on December 2 with “mobile-friendly control options,” and it will be free to play with a Netflix subscription. The press release seems to suggest that it will also be available to purchase, but the wording makes it a little unclear. When I search the game on my phone, only the Netflix version appears. That said, looking at Rockstar’s developer profile, it does have all its other games for sale, so I expect Red Dead will get a similar dual release. Currently, GTA: San Andreas Definitive Edition costs $26.99, so maybe John Marston’s journey will be similarly priced.

All updated versions of the game include all of the Game of the Year Edition content and the Undead Nightmare zombie DLC expansion.

Alongside the mobile ports, updates will be made for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch 2 to enhance the game’s appearance and performance across these systems. You can even use mouse controls on Switch 2. If you currently own the game on PS4, Switch 1 or a backwards compatible version on Xbox, you’ll get all the new enhancements for free. PlayStation and Switch gamers will be able to carry over their saves from the older consoles to the newer hardware, but Xbox players are out of luck and will have to start fresh.

PlayStation Plus or GTA+ subscribers will also be able to access the game with their subscription.

Leading up to this release, there have been rumours of a Red Dead Redemption 2 upgrade for current-gen consoles and release on Switch 2, but perhaps those leaks were actually about this game instead.
