Amazon made a 21-inch Echo Show

I'm not sure who this is for, but with that price tag, it's not me

Amazon has released a new surprise Echo Show with a 21-inch screen and a jaw-dropping $549 price tag. The new smart display looks nice, and Amazon says it has the best speakers ever in a smart display, but its large size and price tag will likely limit its appeal to many users.

Beyond the larger screen and speakers, Amazon has also improved the video chat camera with a larger field of view. This allows you to walk around more, and the camera’s auto-framing tech can follow you across a wider space. The company is combining that with better noise reduction software to substantially improve video calling on this device. These camera and speaker updates are also coming to a revamped version of the Echo Show 15 that Amazon released alongside the 21-inch version.

Amazon is also claiming that these new smart displays are great as digital picture frames. However, the product has a one-star rating on Amazon, and the only review mentions that while the product is awesome, Amazon has started pumping more ads onto the display, so now it’s usually ad, photo, photo, ad, etc. I think this is a pretty bad look for a product that could cost more than an iPad in Canada.

The new Echo Show 15-inch is $399, and the 21-inch version is $549. Both ship with an Alexa voice remote and wall-mounting hardware. You can also get a stand to place on your counter, but those cost around $134, which raises the price considerably. By default, both displays come with black borders, but for an extra $50, you can buy different colours to help it blend in with your decor.
