The most popular phone brands in North America won’t surprise you

Most Canadians have an Apple or Samsung phone

Apple has a a chokehold on the Canadian smartphone market with 60.3 percent of people using iPhones. Samsung follows that up with a 24.2 percent marketshare and Google tails with 6.5 percent of the market.

These stats come from StatCounter and line up pretty closely with the U.S. market. Apple leads stateside with 51 percent, Samsung follows with 23.7 percent, and Google follows behind with 14.6 percent. That said, in the U.S., there are lots of different analytics companies, and Counterpoint actually puts Motorola in third place above Google.

When you look at the smartphone market from a global perspective, things do change quite considerably. Apple still holds the top spot with 28 percent of the market, but Samsung is much closer with 22 percent. Chinese brand Xiaomi comes in third place with 10 percent of the market. Beyond that, the rest of the notable brands sit between six and two percent.

According to Stats Canada, roughly 35.4 million people have a mobile plan and Canadian households spend roughly $109 per month on cell phone services and $74 on home internet as of 2021. It also reported that as of 2022, Canadians use an average of 5.7GB of mobile data, which is quite a bit lower than the OECD 2022 average of 10.4GB.

For internet, Stats Canada reports that the average residential internet service subscription used 482.5GB of data per month in 2022.
