Telus-owned Koodo added a $3 charge to some customers’ bills if their device still uses the provider’s 3G network.
According to a FAQ page about the charge, Koodo says it’s applying the charge to help it “continue supporting legacy networks and the costs of maintaining old equipment.” The provider says only 2.3 percent of customers use the legacy network. Koodo also notes it’s a temporary measure until the company follows other carriers in shutting down its 3G network.
The $3 charge applies to customers with devices that still use 3G via voice calls or data. Koodo also warns that some customers will have older devices that connect to LTE for data, but still fall back to 3G for calls. The company says these devices are typically more than six years old, from another country, or not supported by Koodo.
For customers who want to avoid yet another wireless price hike, Koodo says the only way is to upgrade to a 4G device. The provider says it loaded additional discounts into impacted customers’ accounts and recommends checking online or visiting a Koodo store to learn more about upgrading.
