The first short film for Apple Vision Pro comes out this week

The most exciting immersive content drops October 10

Watching content in the Apple Vision Pro headset is one of the best use cases for it, and now Apple and Oscar-winning filmmaker Edward Berger are set to release a 17-minute short film called Submerged to test out how shooting a narrative film adapts to being watched by someone that can look around within a scene.

Apple has released a trailer, and the film looks quite intense, so it will be extremely interesting to see how that translates to watching it in the headset. The description below the trailer says, “A WWII submarine crew combats a harrowing torpedo attack in this adrenaline-pumping thrill ride.”

Overall, I’m really excited to see what this film is like. I’m a big fan of movies and how the director and cinematographer use camera placement and movement to tell their story and I’m really curious how that will translate to an immersive film. From the trailer, it doesn’t look like I’ll be able to look a full 360 degrees around, but I’m quite intrigued to find out how the team will focus my attention when I have the option of looking around.

In the Alicia Keys immersive studio experience, I found myself looking mainly at Keys since she was singing and incredibly captivating as a performer. However, in others, like the Boundless hot air balloon episode, it’s designed to have you look around and experience the spectacle of all the balloons. It will be interesting to see how Submerged marries those forms of immersive filmmaking with traditional director-led cinema.
