YouTube Shorts get a little longer with three-minute runtime

The change will happen on October 15

YouTube is increasing the limits on its shorts videos from one minute to three as it looks to expand Shorts to more users.

The company is also rolling out a few more updates, including comment previews, and a more robust clips feature to turn full length YouTube videos into shorts. Finally the video platform is adding a new option on the web or mobile apps that will allow users to temporally turn off shorts recommendations from the home page.

While all the updates are fairly helpful to creators, I suspect the most notable will be the increased video length. I often like to make longer vertical videos explaining things or telling stories so I’m rarely able to post my vertical videos to YouTube because they’re too long. After October 15th, this should be less of a problem, allowing me to make one video and post it on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok instead of having to re-edit and cut content to make it fit all platforms.

Instagram currently allows videos that are a minute and half and TikTok will do videos up to ten minutes.
