Google Photos getting AI-powered video editing tools in new update

The new Enhance feature coming to both iOS and Android sounds like it will be quite fun to play with

An update to the Google Photos app on iOS and Android is rolling out now, giving users more tools to edit videos. As with many Google updates, its rollout will be in stages, so while you might not have the update now, it should appear on your phone soon.

The company is adding things like AI-powered presets that can automatically trim your clips, adjust the brightness and exposure or even apply motion tracking, slow motion or cool zooms, all with a simple tap. These features are coming to both the iOS and Android versions of the app.

On the Android side, there are some additional features such as a new ‘Trim’ tool, a new ‘Enhance’ button and a ‘Speed’ control.

The Trim tool works as you’d expect, but Google has made it easier to use to ensure your clips start and end precisely where you want them to. The Enhance option will add saturation and contrast to your videos while applying stabilization effects, all with one simple tap. It remains to be seen how effective the stabilization will be or if it will give users more control in case things go awry with really wonky videos, but for most, the one-click nature of this tool should help make normal videos even better for sharing. The Speed tool can help you turn regular videos into slow motion or speed them up, but it’s unclear if this will only apply to videos shot in high framerates (60fps and up) or if it will use AI to add fake frames in between the frames of your regular video to make standard framerate videos slower (24-30fps).

You can read a little more about this on Google’s support page, but there isn’t much there so most of us will need to wait for the updates to hit our phones before we can find out more.
