After what could have been another assassination attempt on Donald Trump, Elon Musk took to X (formerly Twitter) and posted a very dumb, reactionary thought.
On September 16th, a man with an AK-47 was arrested outside Mar-a-Lago, where Trump resides. In reaction, Musk posted on X, “And no one is even trying to assassinate Biden/ Kamala 🤔.” The tweet has since been deleted.
Musk, who has security clearance and access to classified U.S. government information, is putting his clearance at risk. A lot of his money comes from government contracts, and saying something that potentially puts the President and Vice President at risk could jeopardize those contracts.
Tom Nichols, a retired professor of the U.S. Naval War College who now writes for The Atlantic, said as much in a post on X:
I had a security clearance for most of my adult life. If I had said something like this, I would’ve lost it instantly. And yet this guy is still a major government contractor. https://t.co/exrI8VYsa7

Musk then followed up, saying he was making a joke.
Well, one lesson I’ve learned is that just because I say something to a group and they laugh doesn’t mean it’s going to be all that hilarious as a post on 𝕏

However, Musk has several followers who could take his words seriously, which is a big problem. Especially considering most people in the U.S. can quickly get a gun, and there have already been two attempts on Trump this year.
Turns out that jokes are WAY less funny if people don’t know the context and the delivery is plain text
