Google Meet will soon automatically open a picture-in-picture (PiP) window for your meeting when you switch tabs in Google Chrome.
The search giant detailed the new feature in a blog post and shared a GIF of the feature in action. It’s worth noting that Meet previously supported a PiP mode, but users had to manually enable it. Moreover, Google notes in the blog post that PiP mode is only available on Google Chrome for desktops.
As helpful as the new feature is, it’s definitely a bummer that it’s only available for Chrome. Hopefully Google expands the feature to more browsers in the future.

The blog post goes on to detail how users can turn off the automatic PiP feature through Chrome’s settings. Additionally, it notes that the feature started rolling out for ‘Rapid Release’ domains on August 26th and will gradually rollout for ‘Scheduled Release’ domains starting September 10th. In both cases, it can take up to 15 days for the feature to become available.
Ultimately, automatic PiP will become available to all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers and everyone with personal Google accounts.
