Samsung has started rolling out a firmware update for its 2018 lineup of QLED TVs that adds support for AMD’s FreeSync tech.
FreeSync is an adaptive synchronization technology that’s designed to help remove the screen tearing and stuttering associated with monitor gaming. Nvidia supports a similar feature in G-Sync.
G-Sync, however, is a proprietary technology that requires specialized hardware inside of a monitor, in addition to a compliant Nvidia GPU. While FreeSync is mostly used in conjunction with PC GPUs, this addition is squarely aimed at the Xbox One X.
Microsoft updated the Xbox One X at the end of April to add support for FreeSync — as well as 1440p, a resolution found on many high-end gaming monitors.
At the moment, FreeSync only works on Samsung TVs when they’re set to output at 1080p. The company also notes there may be some odd screen brightness issue.
To enable FreeSync, install the latest firmware update, then navigate to Game Mode in the settings menu. Currently, FreeSync is available on the NU8000, Q6FN, Q7FN and Q9FN.
