The OnePlus 6 finally fixed the alert slider, a mainstay feature since the company’s second phone.
The OnePlus 2 first debuted the slider, a simple switch that could toggle loud, vibrate and silent. However, OnePlus changed the slider in its next flagship to control the Do Not Disturb mode instead.
Unfortunately, changes to how DND worked on Android messed up that kind of functionality, especially with features like scheduled DND. OnePlus removed that feature on its last few flagships in order to ensure it didn’t conflict with the slider position (and this removal will continue with the OnePlus 6).
After numerous complaints, OnePlus changed the slider back to its original functionality with the OnePlus 6. Android P’s new volume controls pair really well with the old style volume slider. The new volume control contains a software button that toggles between loud, vibrate and silent.
For all the fans clamouring for the return of vibrate mode, there are sure to be those who are miffed that the slider no longer controls DND. Sadly, you can’t please everybody.
However, giving users the choice in the settings might be a nice compromise. The volume slider by default mutes media volume along with ringer volume. That behaviour can be changed in the settings — why not allow users to switch DND and vibrate as well?
