Back when Facebook updated its social network to support ‘Reactions,’ the feature that allows users to respond to status updates with one of several pre-canned emoji, the company said it didn’t want to add a ‘Dislike’ button into the mix.
“We don’t want to turn Facebook into a forum where people are voting up or down on people’s posts. That doesn’t seem like the kind of community we want to create,” said Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg at the time.
However, it now appears the company has changed its stance, at least when it comes to its Messenger chat app.
According to TechCrunch, the social media giant is testing a new Reaction-like feature within its popular chat app. Like Reactions, the feature allows users to respond to a message with one of several Facebook selected emoji. The interesting thing to note here is that on top of the six emoji found on Facebook proper, there’s an additional thumbs down one. TechCrunch reports the company sees this emoji as “more of a ‘no’ button,’ instead of a dislike button, noting that it’s testing both the thumbs down and all the other reactions to see if users find them “helpful for logistics and voting.”
“We’re always testing ways to make Messenger more fun and engaging. This is a small test where we enable people to share an emoji that best represents their feelings on a message,” said a spokesperson for the company to TechCrunch.
Facebook did not state when it plans to roll out this feature to the majority of its chat users.
