During Oculus Connect, Oculus VR’s annual developer conference, co-founder Nate Mitchell told attendees the company is working on a VR-first web browser called “Carmel.”
The Carmel developer preview will be available soon, according to TechCrunch‘s Josh Constine. However, once Carmel is released to the public, developers will be able to create VR experiences that don’t require a dedicated app to try out. The browser is designed to work with both the Rift and Gear VR, as well as the upcoming standalone Headset Oculus teased today.
Mitchell told attendees he sees a future where every company will have a WebVR destination, in addition to their current website and mobile app. A car manufacturer like Ford, for instance, could use WebVR to allow consumers to tour the inside of one of their vehicles before buying it.
