Rogers has been working in the Internet of Things space for a number of years. I recall a presentation by ex-CEO Nadir Mohamed in 2010 where he stated the company was going to double down on investing in machine-to-machine (M2M) and “connected experiences.”
“Canadians have an estimated 360 million machines or devices that need to be connected. And, the M2M space is estimated to grow by 500 percent in the next 5 years,” said Mohamed at the time.
The company is the Canadian leader with 60 percent market share and powers over 1.5 million M2M/IoT connections, according to Rogers. Rogers is part of the M2M World Alliance and the group of nine global telecom players have decided to shift its name to become known as the ‘IoT World Alliance.’ In Canada, Rogers has registered a trademark with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO).
In a statement to MobileSyrup, Rogers noted the goal of the IoT World Alliance is to provide “a global solution that streamlines the adoption of IoT communications in over 60 countries through its Single Global SIM service.”
When the M2M World Alliance was formed in 2013, founding telecom companies noted the objective was to allow for “large multinational companies to deploy connected devices in multiple countries on a single platform. The solution aims to simplify and promote the adoption of machine-to-machine (M2M) technology worldwide.”
“According to some forecasts, 6.4 billion Internet of Things devices will be connected globally this year. IoT solutions present huge opportunities for businesses, including new revenue streams, reduced costs, higher productivity levels and better customer service,” said Randy Bryson, co-chairman of the IoT World Alliance, in a statement to MobileSyrup.
Apart from Rogers, other telecom players part of the IoT World Alliance are Telefonica, KPN, VimpelCom, etisalat, Singtel, NTT Docomo, Telstra, Telenor Connexion.
