Motorola’s Moto X Play isn’t set to go on sale until tomorrow, but one carrier, Telus, has jumped the gun.
One sleuthing reader found the active link to the Moto X Play on Telus’s web store, revealing pricing information. The device, which Motorola claimed would cost “around $399,” is for sale at Telus for $420 outright, and $50 on a 2-year term with a $60 minimum plan.
Curiously, that’s almost the identical pricing to the 2014 Moto X, which is slightly better in some ways (processor, build quality) and significantly worse in others (battery, display, ergonomics). It’s unclear whether Telus will sell the two devices concurrently, but it appears there will be some overlap for the time being.
The Moto X Play, which we’ve looked at extensively already, features a 5.5-inch 1080p LCD panel, an eight-core 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage, a 21MP rear camera sensor with F2.0 lens, 1080p video capture, a 5MP front-facing camera, a 3,630mAh battery, with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. In other words, this is a pretty great phone for the price.
The Moto X Play also has replaceable back covers that can be purchased separately. The company is only selling the black model in Canada except for at Koodo, which ships with a teal back.
We’ll have all the details from Motorola’s other launch carriers, Koodo, Bell and SaskTel, tomorrow. In the meantime, check out the listing at Telus’s web store.
