Nearly a third of OpenTable’s bookings are done on smartphones

OpenTable is now owned by Priceline, but began in 2002 independently offering its service in Canada, then launched its mobile app ten years later in 2012.

With 30 million bookings under its belt, the more impressive stat is the number performed by smartphones. According to OpenTable, mobile devices now account for 17 per cent of overall reservations, with over five million to date. This year, that number has increased to 29 per cent of total bookings, an increase from 13 per cent in 2012.

Bryan Huehn, OpenTable Country Manager for Canada, said in a statement, “Canadians love to dine out and OpenTable strives to make their dining experience the best it can be. We’re thrilled that we have reached the 30 million diners milestone. We are continuing to listen to what diners want and are constantly updating our offerings to meet the needs of diners and restaurants across the country.”

OpenTable is one of the many food-related apps that have recently seen a surge in usage. Apart from reservation bookings, on-demand apps like Grabb and Ritual, which are often considered the Uber of food ordering, offer a new era of convenience and put the consumer first rather than waiting in long lineups.
