Despite meagre expectations from investors, Microsoft’s mobile business grew by a healthy amount during its most recent fiscal quarter.
On Thursday, CEO Satya Nadella announced Microsoft’s fiscal Q3 results where he revealed that the company’s revenue topped $21 billion. Microsoft’s consumer devices business contributed $9 billion to the company’s revenue.
Specifically, the company sold 8.6 million Lumia smartphones during its most recent quarter, which is a 18 per cent from its previous quarter. When Microsoft bought Nokia it also acquired the company’s feature phone business, which sold 24.7 million in the quarter. However, due to currency exchange rates, the company actually experienced a gross loss of $61 million on that part of its business.
The company also did well on the tablet front. Although Microsoft didn’t announce the exact number of Surface tablets sold, it did say that revenue derived from tablet sales rose by 44 per cent to $713 million. Moreover, the company is expected to continue to do well in tablets, especially once the Surface 3 arrives on store shelves on May 7.
Nadella told investors that the company’s suite of mobile Office apps surpassed 100 million downloads this quarter. The high attachment rate of the company’s free apps expected to parlay into the sale of its paid ones.
All in all, a strong quarter for Redmond.
