What are we, chopped liver?
Motorola announced today, during a new hardware-free press conference at Mobile World Congress, that it plans to expand Moto Maker, the customization platform used to make green Moto X’s with yellow accents, to Europe and Mexico this year. Where is Canada in this equation? Decidedly absent. We’ve reached out to Motorola to ask why expanding Moto Maker south but not north is in the cards, but we don’t expect to hear anything solid. Our guess: tight customs procedures may push Moto Maker beyond the four-day build-and-ship time, but that’s just conjecture.
Motorola is also promising a successor to the Moto X by the end of summer, which would bring it close to the one-year anniversary of one of 2013’s best devices. Rick Osterloh, SVP of product management at Motorola, said the company is working on multiple wearable devices, and they should on the market by the end of the year. We heard a similar statement from HTC this week, too. Provided Lenovo doesn’t mess with these plans too much once its $2.91 billion purchase of the OEM is approved, Motorola should continue making some excellent hardware in 2014.
Now, Moto, who do we need to talk with to convince you it’s worth bringing Moto Maker to Canada?
Update: Motorola has issued an official statement on Moto Maker, and while it’s not the answer we want it provides at least some hope for the future.
Motorola remains committed to the Canadian market. We hope to expand Moto Maker availability to Canada in the future, but don’t have specific plans we can share now.
