Motorola expands Droid Zap to all Android devices, but will anyone use it?

When Motorola announced its new Verizon-only Droid lineup in August of last year, it debuted an exclusive app, the photo- and vide-sharing platform, Droid Zap.

The idea is seemingly simple, but potentially quite powerful when used in the right circumstance: swipe up on any photo or video to share it with any other Droid Zap users in the vicinity. The Droid Zap app uses your GPS location to find, within a reasonable distance, others with Motorola’s sharing app installed, and issues a push notification for them to download it. For added privacy, it’s possible to attach a PIN code to the content.

Though the app appears to be useful, I fear the number of users who will take advantage of the content broadcast will be small. Motorola, too, has kept one of the app’s best features, Zap Zone, exclusive to Verizon customers, too: Zap Zone creates a small broadcast net for invited users to share photos, videos and files. Hopefully Moto will keep that exclusivity period shorter than Droid Zap itself.
